The road to Granudie - Millthorpe's main street
Small businesses are the lifeblood of the Australian dream. Both business, and the Aussie dream embody and shape the character of places; designed and driven by people who are OF communities, rather than just IN them. Ironic as it may be, the economic contributions small businesses make in Australia are in fact, large.
In a 2019 report by the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, small businesses accounted for nearly 98% of all businesses, with 76.2% of these being ‘micro businesses’ employing under 5 people – an example of which is yours truly! These 98% of small businesses contributed to 35% of gross domestic profits, and employed 44% of the Australian workforce.
Despite small and micro business’ kicking big goals, they often have a low net income. This has undoubtedly taken another hit in light of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and current world climate. Whilst small businesses have historically been more likely to innovate and adapt compared to large companies, factors such as unpredictable and ongoing enforced shop closures, shipping and postage delays, narrow financial support criteria and the associated accumulation of debt strained (and in many cases, continues to strain) the ability of small businesses to do so.
Small businesses are doing it tough but are the lifeblood of the Australian dream and contribute to a whopping 98% of all Australian businesses and 44% of the Aussie workforce. Covid-19 has impacted us all but in true Aussie spirit we get up again and again, ready for another round. Now more than ever, buying local is buying Australian jobs.
Granudie is not exempt from these hard times and we are fortunate we have and no shopfront to maintain. However, like so many others we have had to deal with shipping delays, limited ingredient stock due to failed local crops and the increased cost as a flow on effect.
Whilst this ultimately means a smaller profit margin for us, we refuse to compromise on quality, ethical production, sustainability of our local food economy and taste. On that note, a huge THANK YOU to all of our loyal and new customers making the choice to buy our product! That truly makes the world of difference.
You may now leave the table.
